To go gently, or to rage!

There is a popular ad campaign out that states that the generation said it would never get old didn’t. This statement promotes hair dye for men. This brings to mind two questions for boomers. First do you feel you didn’t get old? Second if you did, was gray hair the cause?
Personally, I feel that even if it is a cute ad, it over simplifies the problem. I am 50. May 2008 I hit 247 lbs. and I realized that I could not move as fast as I used t… Continue

More research proving the benefits of eating healthy fats and supplementing with omegas. Here is an excerpt from CNN Health.
"Studies from two different teams published Monday in the Archives of Ophthalmology provide more evidence that these foods -- which contain healthy fats -- can reduce the risk of developing a retina-destroying condition known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
The studies aren't the first to suggest fish and omega-3 fatty acids may help protect vision; in fact, t… Continue

A study published by the New York Times compared running outdoors on pavement to indoors on the treadmill. The conclusion was that you will burn more calories outside then in, but you will also have a greater chance of injury outdoors.
My recommendation would be to combine the two.… Continue

While I work out the details of putting the exercise library together you can all take advantage of another great resource I found on the net. Its free of charge and give you pics and videos of a ton of different exercises. You can also find it under the resources and links section. Theres demo's and basic workouts, but its not as specific as some of the other resources nor does it provide the insights that a good trainer or professional can. For instruction and new ideas though its definitely a… Continue

Here is one of my favorite exercises to give to clients and use in my own workouts. Not many exercises can give you the benefits of flatter abs, better balance, and stronger back muscles like the side plank. With this exercise, you can strengthen your core and upper body while avoiding the injuries that may come from everyday activities. You can put it into your workouts with your regular ab routine or on days where your not doing any direct ab work. 2-3 Da
I hear the same thing from people all the time....
"I don't have time to spend an hour a day working out!!"
My response is always that YOU ONLY NEED 30-40 MINUTES 4-5 DAYS A WEEK to start seeing weight loss results.
Not only can you get a great workout in this time, but you can actually split your workouts up. If you can give 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes at night you will start to see results in your body and yes your abs after a few weeks.
You can get so… Continue

I just was reading the new issue of Men's Health with Derek Jeter on the cover. The main title of course was 6-Pack Abs. What a shock.... a magazine promoting how you can get a 6 pack.
In case you haven't noticed by now there is no easy way to get 6 pack abs. It takes dedication, hard work, and patience. You can't just simply take a pill to get there or do the latest fancy ab exercise. Your not going to magically drop 20 lbs off your stomach this week by going on the Atkins… Continue

For those that don't belong to a gym, but still want to keep in shape here are the pieces of equipment you should have(in no particular order).
1. Dumbbells: For women 5, 8, 10, 12, and 15 LB dumbbells will usually keep you properly challenged. For the guys and the girls who are too strong for these you should look into getting power blocks or the heaviest weights you can lift 6-8 times. This will at least keep you challenged and give you something to strive for. You may actually look fo… Continue

HI,
I have started to do a warm up (not stretching but "warming up") before my workouts. I got away from it because I thought waste of time, worthless....etc. However, I have noticed that it is really helpful in not just the getting the muscles and body ready for a workout, it also gets my "mindset" into why I am there, what my goals are for the w/o and centers me into the exercises. I never really realized that connection until a few weeks ago. My warm up is called a dynamic warm up from a trai… Continue
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was fu… Continue

Ok so I tried to write about 5 different blogs tonight about 5 different subjects. The problem is I can't put together complete thoughts(its getting late), and I had to save those drafts so I can edit them tommorow. The good news is that I'll have a ton of useful info to post this week. I did want to get a post in tonight though so I'm going to leave you with one that I don't have to put any thought into. Heres a creed that I found in Napolean Hill's book Think and Grow Rich. Its called the Opti… Continue

I am 5'8 and can carry muscle well, I am not petite! MY workout philosophy is each day is a workout day and I work out 5 days a week that way. I sta… Continue
